Topic: Forum Revival

Thanks to nikita/Belriose, the forum is back in business. He also had the amazing idea of saving the old forum from which I (and any volunteers) will restore by hand most of the crucial content that was lost. This includes the RP, for those wishing to continue from where it left off.

Please let me know if you want to help and I'll provide the link to the old forum which was saved.

Thank you! The real work is still to be done, transferring the content from the old one to the new one...

Flicker, if you need help with that, please tell me!

Re: Forum Revival

Hey all.
Glad to see the forum up again.
Thank you nikita/Belriose for your ongoing efforts in restoring the forum.

If there is interest finishing The Facility as an RP, I will resume as GM
Or I could finish by posting an ending in story form.

Re: Forum Revival

Nice to see it back. So some of the content from the old forum will be re-posted in the new one?

And a couple of questions:

Is the board called Tales of Belial meant for stories in the Belial universe, or is it just a place to discuss it?

Is the board called Transformation Stories meant for transformation stories outside the Belial universe only, or is it meant for both?

Is no-ip. completely OK with the content on these boards? I assume they are since they was chosen as new host, but it's nice to know.

The rules:

It says you are not allowed to "distribute or otherwise make available content that is illegal, harmful, or offensive." Not making available content that is illegal and harmful should be easy, but what's "offensive"  usually depends on the person. While most wouldn't join if they didn't have any interests in the subject, a single person to complain for whatever reason could be enough.

Offensive content is described as:

"Content that is defamatory, obscene, abusive, invasive of privacy, or otherwise objectionable, including content that constitutes child pornography, relates to bestiality, or depicts non-consensual sex acts."

If this is references to real people and the real world, it's not a problem since all the stories are fiction. If not, it's gonna be difficult not to write anything that can be seen as "obscene". Avoiding child pornography shouldn't be a problem. Depicting non-consensual sex acts isn't a problem either, but there are some examples of this from the old forum. It's also a little difficult to know what they mean about bestiality. If we are talking about ordinary animals, it's all clear. But humans being transformed into something bestial is less clear. Maybe if there is something that still gives them away as not being "real" animals, but transformed humans that have certain traits not seen in animals, it could be OK.

I don't mean to nitpick, it's just that having it confirmed that there is no risk that what happened to the old forum will not happen here, would feel a little comforting.

Re: Forum Revival

To be honest, there are no clear guidelines for what counts as "obscene" or "offensive". A lot of hosts use the same vague terminology. I imagine they mean civil and human rights violations, with things like nazism, terrorism, animal abuse, racism, slavery, hate crimes and the like.

So in the end with things that are vague and ambiguous, you have to nitpick and hope for the best. The host is Amazon, so they're based in the US where sex and nudity is taboo but violence and gore is celebrated. On the other hand, they've gone international, and in Europe, it's the opposite in regards to sex and violence. So there isn't even a regional set of standards to go by.

As for the forums, I'll clarify them.

I can't say anything about "obscene" and i agree to flicker about his view about that.

The german laws are rather clear, that bestiality is just about real animals (since i'm german it's rather important for me personally). The server itself is located somewhere in north virginia and i'm not sure about the legal situation there. But i doubt that it's a problem. Even if amazon decides to take us down it won't stay down for long, since i have a backup-hoster and daily backups of all the data. Even the adress would be the same, since no-ip.org doesn't host anything, it's only the domain-name-provider.

Re: Forum Revival

Sounds like all necessary precautions has been taken when creating the new forum.

I agree that it seems a bit weird that it should be legal to write about horrible killings and torture, but illegal to write about sex. To some degree I can understand it, since committing murder is far less likely than performing some unacceptable sexual acts. Most people above a certain age has a sexual drive, but not many feel the need to kill. But this forum is about transformations, and any attempts to do this in real life is more difficult than kill and torture anyone. It's completely impossible to repeat any of the stuff that is happening in this kind of fiction. The setting could involve non-consensual situations without actual sex, for instance kidnapping a girl and strapping her to a table or something, which is something you often see in crime fiction. So I'm not sure of that could be considered inappropriate or not. Personally I have no need to see cruelty involved, but there are stories where it's one of the ingredients.

It's difficult enough to define sex in real life, not even Bill Clinton is sure what is sexual acts or not. And in fiction it can be even more difficult. While there are sexual elements present, can a transformation or fusion be called sex?  No matter the answer, I can't imagine it's much of a problem to speak about, and not exactly what Amazon have in mind when it comes to the rules. They are probably more concerned about graphic description about raping innocent victims and that sort of literature.

Re: Forum Revival

I agree with that. But then, i think the old forum was taken down because it contained copyrighted materials, and not because the description of transformation or sex. (Demon-Man can you clarify that?).

If someone posts copyrighted pics to the forum (that include stories that aren't free) he will be banned permanently from the forum. That's rather harsh, but i have to protect myself from cease-and-desist orders or other similiar things. @flicker and @demon-man i hope that's okay for you.

13

Re: Forum Revival

I didn't know that was the reason. Guess one has to be a little careful when choosing avatars for the profile as well then.

14

Re: Forum Revival

well that banning without warning is a little bit too harsh... i will delete the pics and send the person a warning.

15

Re: Forum Revival

I actually disagree. I don't think the takedown had anything to do with copyrighted material. I think it simply had to do with the fact that the forum had adult material. Someone other than me actually created the original forum in the first place, and that person was extremely inexperienced and didn't give any attention to detail. He in all likelihood just chose the first free forum host that he saw without looking at the Terms of Use.

It was only after I volunteered to step in as admin that the forum became what it did. I knew that the adult nature of the forum went against the Terms of Use but as the years passed I figured that the Terms of Use weren't really enforced, and since I had put so much work into it, I wasn't going to jump hosts any time soon.

The forum got really popular toward the end of its life, especially after I binge-posted 50+ stories in July and August. We averaged a few hundred visits a day. I think it was that popularity that eventually caught the attention of a prude, who figured that such a den of iniquity had to be reported to the authorities.

In any case, I now feel that the takedown was inevitable and a long time coming. It's also provided the opportunity to redo and reorganize things, as I'm sure you've seen. It's a welcome fresh start.

Sorry, i missed your first post. I will ask other forum-admins how they handle that. But reposts from paysites are a taboo...

We have already roughly half of the people we had before! That was fast!
The server is behaving very nicely, we are around 10% capacity, without tweaking.

To be fair, that's only because registering is now a requirement. No more guest lurkers!

23

Re: Forum Revival

Well, I am glad to see the forum back.  It's more my nature to lurk around forums, but I will try to be more active in the current incarnation.

I haven't necessarily been leeching off the community, though.  I've contributed a little here and there under different names, writing TF/TG things, sometimes anonymously.  Will do most of my writing under this name for the foreseeable future, but previously wrote on the BE Addventure under HP, solarpower and IC. A straight-up TG story under Inglorious Custerd.  I wrote in the Mutant Land BEA thread anonymously for the most part, as well as episodes long forgotten here and there.

So please, don't hold it against me for being too lurkish.

Re: Forum Revival

I'm a big fan of your work under HP, and I'll likely be posting a few more of your stories in the next few days (I literally have close to a hundred tabs full of alternative art and literotica I need to get around to). I meant no offense to lurkers. I simply meant there will no longer be guest lurkers as a result of having to register.  It gives me a much more accurate count of the number of unique visitors.

No, I did not take it that way at all.  I apologized for lurking, because I know that lurking is not what keeps a forum going.

Re: Forum Revival

Thanks to the entire team who got this back up and running. This is one of my favorite communities in the TF world, and it's nice to see it back on it's feet.

I see. In the past, I was pretty disappointed in the fact that I was the only poster for ultra long stretches of time. Sometimes I thought that it was moreso "Flicker's Sharing Forum" than anything else. In 4 years, of the 100+ stories in the Transformation Stories section, only 20 of those were posted by someone other than me, and most of those really didn't belong there in the first place (basic TG, etc.).

I realize that my maintaining of this site has helped bring many more into this niche fetish and inspire others' work, and while that does bring a certain amount of satisfaction, I still have to occasionally ask myself whether I'm just making a fool of myself when few else seem to share the same enthusiasm that I do. If even a tenth of users posted something as little as twice a year, there would be much more content.

The team is just nikita and me; Nikita for setting up the site and handling all the technical aspects and me for the ongoing content restoration.

The theme today is taurs.
